We all know how blistering hot it can get in Louisiana during the summer time, and getting into a hot car is no fun. You burn your legs on your hot leather seats, you feel like you need to wear oven mitts to touch your steering wheel and your dripping sweat before you even start your car! Summer can be tough on cars, especially during high temperatures when heat can destroy batteries and stress the cooling system and tires. As a precaution, these vehicle components should be checked periodically during summer to help avoid breakdowns and car problems. All Star Chevrolet North is here with some awesome summer tech tips to make sure your car is in perfect condition for the hot Louisiana weather.
Cars are designed to run hot, but there’s a limit to how hot they should run. But if an engine is allowed to get too hot, moving metal parts can actually start to melt and fuse together, causing a variety of internal problems for your engine. Luckily, all modern cars have an ingenious cooling system that uses a chemical coolant, called antifreeze, and a series of pumps, hoses, thermostats and fans to keep the car at its optimal running temperature. But any problems with this system – low coolant levels, cracked hoses, lose or broken belts, a leak in the radiator or even a loose or missing radiator cap can cause your car to overheat and break down.
- The summertime is tough on cooling systems. Sitting in traffic on a hot day is one of the quickest ways to overheat your car. This is because there’s no air flowing across the engine to help keep it cool. A well-tuned cooling system can take long idles in hot weather, but if you have low coolant levels or a busted fan belt, your engine temperature is going to go up, and fast.
- Check under the hood and make sure that your coolant levels are fine. The general rule is to flush your radiator and add new coolant at least every two years. Flushing the radiator is done with a special chemical that cleans debris and build-up on the inside of the radiator. For summer driving, coolant should be added as a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water. You can even buy premixed coolant so you don’t have to bother with the measurements!
Tires need special care in warmer weather as high temperatures put added stress on them. To maximize tire life and safety, check the tire condition and inflation pressure monthly. It is also good to have the tires rotated every 5,000 – 6,000 miles. Summer heat will cause the pressure within a tire to rise, therefore, it’s important to check the pressure when tires are cold. Your vehicle’s owner manual includes the recommended air pressure for your vehicle’s tires.
Sunshades are sometimes metallic and look almost like aluminum foil stretched across the inside of a windshield. Others, especially ones designed for back seat windows, have child-friendly designs such as Winnie the Pooh on them. Their use is obvious: they keep the sun from reaching the inside of the car and heating up the seats. If you do not have a sunshade, you should try to pack away from the sun. Parking in the shade or in a garage is also highly effective and recommended whenever possible!
